Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz, that has been a sought after stone for many years. The ancient Greeks and Romans held strong belief that Amethyst could prevent intoxication, and therefore made jewelry and chalices with that intention. It’s name originates from Greek a-, "not" + methustos, "intoxicated".
